Restoring the Political Independence of the ABC

Via Machine Gun Keyboard, here's Kevin Rudd talking to Kerry on The 7.30 Report:
When it comes to the future composition of the board of the ABC, I'll be instituting a parallel process so we don't allow the politicisation of the board of the ABC. I'm passionate about the integrity of public institutions. Public institutions have been prostituted by this Government so much over the last decade that we've actually got to draw a line. We need to restore the integrity of institutions so that they are put beyond the reach of partisan politics.

Here's another guarantee for you. I will not make an appointment of any former politician or political staffer to any position on the board of the ABC. We've got to restore the integrity of institutions like the ABC fully.
Amen. Bravo. Fantastic. Hope that one is a "core" pledge, Kev.

An independent ABC is critical to balance the growing menace of the Murdoch Media:
Dow Jones & Co. shareholders say Rupert Murdoch's $5 billion takeover bid will spark an auction of the 125-year-old newspaper publisher.

``We're in the first inning,'' said Lawrence J. Haverty Jr., associate portfolio manager at Gamco Investors Inc. in Rye, New York. Gamco had 825,000 Dow Jones shares as of December. ``Dow Jones is a fish in the pond, and there are sharks swimming around.''
So how do YOU feel about Rupert Murdoch controlling the supply of realtime information from the world's financial markets, Tim Dunlop?

Mind you, I can't help wondering if Kerry O'Brien might not lose his job under an independent ABC board, though. When was the last time the little red dwarf really put some pressure on Howard? O'brien-Howard interviews nowadays have all the excitement and spontaneity of Pauline Hanson's ballroom dancing performances.

Anyway, three cheers for weez:
I want my ABC back. If Labor is elected, that might just happen.

Could Rudd be persuaded to get the damn ads off of SBS, too?
And get Stan Grant out of the studio too. I think he's another ASIO plant.

Heh.
