Having a candidate named Jim MacAnally was only one of their problems. The Liberals spent a fortune promoting their "Team" for the Gold Coast Council elections, but their efforts have been a complete waste of money. Local councilors were re-elected in nearly all divisions, and incumbent mayor Ron Clarke looks set to keep his seat, with the Liberals' Tom Tate tying for second place (final results not expected till Friday).
Coming from a region where the Liberals had their best results at a federal level just a few months ago, the result is a comprehensive message to Canberra: keep your party politics out of local elections. We want real people who can deal with real issues.
